Penguins blast past Oaks

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Miranda Gregory sparked an offensive explosion for Dominican women's soccer with a brace in a 5-1 victory Sunday over Menlo at Kennelly Field.
The five goals were the most scored by the Penguins (2-0) since a 5-0 victory over Holy Names in 2018. Dominican tallied 20 shots with 17 on goal as they consistently pressed the attack against the Oaks (0-1).

Shulien Kemmler Liu challenged the backline of Menlo early and often and was able to beat her defender down the left side in the ninth minute before sending a perfect cross to Gregory who deflected the ball into the back netting for the 1-0 lead. Emma Wilson then got in the action sending a ball behind the defense to the foot of Ysabella Belandres on the left side and she crossed it to the waiting foot of Gregory once again for the 2-0 lead in the 23rd minute.

The Penguin bench then got into the action as Brisa Navarrete perfectly timed a through ball to Carmi Dotario in the 39th minute and Dotario sent a rocket inside the far post for the 3-0 lead heading into the half. Dominican held the Oaks without a shot on goal for the entire first half as they controlled the pace of play.

Menlo found some success in the second half with their attack as Natalie Haro made a leaping save to keep them off the scoreboard momentarily but Lyla Deveraux's ensuing corner found the head of Kaylin Gonzalez for the goal in the 47th minute. The next half hour was a battle in the midfield with few scoring chances until a scramble in the box saw Belandres fire one shot off the keeper's hands but the ball fell right back to her foot and the follow up left no doubt for a 4-1 lead in the 77th minute. Gregory's day was not done as she found Navarrete in the middle for one last Dominican goal in the 82nd minute.

Dominican will return to the pitch Thursday as it takes on Cal Poly Humboldt at 1 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field.
