SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer generated plenty of offensive opportunities but could not find the back netting in a 2-0 loss to Cal Poly Humboldt on Thursday afternoon at Kennelly Field.
Shulien Kepler Liu had the first scoring opportunity of the game for the Penguins (2-1-0) as she worked her way to the top of the box and ripped a shot on frame but Carson Thomson-Terrel was able to leap to secure the shot in the 14th minute for the Jacks (1-2-0). Four minutes later,
Ysabella Belandres sent a pass across the face of the goal to a waiting
Felicity Muro but her shot ricocheted off the left post to keep the scoreboard blank.
Alexis Blue found the head of Megan Janikowski in the 30th minute off a free kick and Janikowski headed it high over the hands of the Penguin keeper to take the 1-0 lead. Neither team could generate much over the final 15 minutes of the half and the Jacks took the lead into the break.
Cal Poly Humboldt then capitalized on a defensive miscue to open the second half as Mari Ige stole a pass at the top of the box and sent a shot just inside the right post for the 2-0 lead in the 47th minute. Belandres raced past the defense for a breakaway attempt in the 57th minute, but Thomson-Terrel closed the angle and was able to get a body on the shot attempt to maintain her lead. The Penguins had one last quality chance as
Camille Aquino found herself alone on the left side of the box and loosed a shot in the 85th minute but Thomson-Terrel was there once more to deflect the ball away from her net to preserve the momentum and the shutout.
Dominican will return to the field Sunday as it takes on San Francisco State at 1 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field.
