ROCKLIN, Calif. –
Camille Aquino picked a perfect time for her first career goal to lift Dominican past Jessup 1-0 Friday in the season opener at Warrior Field.
The Penguins (1-0) controlled the pace of play for most of the game holding a 16-10 advantage in shots and 7-3 in shots on goal and corner kicks.
Natalie Haro corralled all three shots on her net to earn the victory for Dominican.
Dominican had the only shots on goal in the first half with the best chance coming in the 29th minute.
Jenna Pevenage placed a perfect free kick into the box finding the head of
Ireland O'Donnell who headed it down, but Celeste Fernandez was in the right spot to collect the save for the Warriors (0-1). Fernandez finished the half with four saves.
Shulien Kemmler Liu got in on the action with a shot on net in the 56th minute but the keeper was able to make the save towards the bottom left corner and start a counter that allowed Kaylee Gillespie to get Jessup's first shot on net in the 56th minute.
Ysabella Belandres tested Fernandez again in the 59th minute but Fernandez was able to just steer it wide of the left post to keep her net clean.
The Warriors managed a bit more on the attack in the second half closing its deficit in shots, but the final 10 minutes belonged to the Penguins. Dominican tried again and again to break the scoreless tie but the opening goal proved elusive. A foul with 27 seconds left allowed Dominican to set up a free kick and a 50/50 ball into the box fell to the foot of Aquino who buried the shot into the back netting with four seconds left on the clock.
Dominican will return home Sunday to take on Menlo at 1 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field as it celebrates Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day.
