Penguins and Seawolves draw in physical battle

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer battled to a defensive minded 0-0 tie with Sonoma State on Sunday afternoon at Seawolf Soccer field.

The Seawolves (2-1-3) played physically the entire game racking up 14 fouls and five yellow cards while frustrating the Penguins (3-2-1) offensive opportunities for most of the game. Alejandro Reyes secured his third shutout of the season with five saves for Dominican.

The first half proved a difficult one for the Penguins as they managed only two shots on goal with several costly turnovers in the defensive third of the field set up Sonoma State with some quality chances. The defense stood strong as each time the backline recovered to close the shooting angles or Reyes was in the right spot to make the save.

Dominican adjusted in the second half with the offense creating several quality chances. Lex Bernier intercepted a pass from the Seawolves backline and nodded it to himself inside the box but Jack Chapman was able to slide in and get a fingertip on the ball to deflect it off Bernier and out before he could loose a shot. Anthony Stainer made a solid move to get past the defense at the top of the box in the 55th minute but Sonoma State recovered in time to get in the way of the shot and block it on the way through.

Jake Kazlauskas got involve in the action as he made a nice run into the attacking third and had a good look at the goal in the 63rd minute but the shot went high. The best opportunity for the Seawolves came in the 66th minute as Jose Rios Lara found Michael Gray on the right side of the 6-yard box and Gray had a nice tight angle shot towards the back post, but Reyes got a fingertip on it to send it wide of his net.

Frustrated down the stretch, Sonoma State picked up four yellow cards in the final 10 minutes arguing with the official as Armando Jimenez and Bernier had some set piece chances but were unable to get them on frame as the game ended without a change on the scoreboard.

The Penguins will have several days to rest up and prepare for its PacWest opener as it hosts Point Loma Nazarene University on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field.
