Penguins fall to rival Urban Knights

DALY CITY, Calif. – Dominican Women's Tennis fell 6-1 to No. 48 Academy of Art at Bay Club South San Francisco Sunday afternoon.
 
Maria Gavrilov and Haley Garcia of the Penguins dropped a 6-2 match to their Bay Area foes, Jessica Plazas and Estelle Najean in No. 2 doubles to begin the match. Next to finish was No. 3 doubles with 6-3 in favor of Viktoria Leth and Paulina Alvarez of the Urban Knights despite the best efforts of Deepa Varnajaraand Carolina Guerrero of Dominican.
 
The Penguins fought in singles play as they faced nationally ranked opponents. Maria Gavrilov fell 6-3, 6-3 to Victoria Leth in singles No. 4 and Haley Garcia fell 6-4, 6-0 to Erica Hellibe in No. 5 singles. It looked like things might turn around for Dominican as No. 49 ranked Audrey Rafols kept two close sets with No. 66 ranked Amejia Supulniece, but fell in a 6-4, 6-4 final.
 
Gina Dudley also hung tight to No. 68 ranked Plazas before falling 6-3, 6-3. Vanaraja gave the Penguins its first victory of the day in No. 3 singles as she was able to edge out her opponent 7-5, 6-4. Astrid Craig was on track to earn the Penguins another point as she took a 6-4 first-set victory in No. 6 singles, but Georgiana Parr came back to clinch the next two sets 6-3, 11-9 in her favor.
 
Dominican will return home for another chance to battle the Urban Knights in a rescheduled match on Friday at noon PST at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
