KAILUA, Hawai'i – Domincian women's tennis fell 4-2 to Hawai'i Pacific to conclude its road swing Wednesday at Kailua Racquet Club.
The two teams battled rainy conditions as play was started and halted multiple times throughout the day. The Sharks (4-2) got off to a strong start as Abigail Wild and Jayanne Palma won 6-0 in No. 1 doubles. Isabel Heupgen and Leonie Mueller added a 6-1 victory on court two to take the doubles point.
Dominican was able to claim a pair of victories in singles play led by
Gina Dudley yet again as she bounced back from a 6-2 loss in the first set to defeat Heupgen 6-4, 6-1 in the final two sets.
Astrid Craig held of Lynn Kaden in the first set 7-5 and rode her momentum to a 6-1 victory in the second set to record a second team point for the Penguins (5-3). It was the most team points earned by the Penguins in their history against HPU tying a match in the spring of 2016.
It looked like the Penguins may break the mark with
Maria Gavrilov claiming the first set at No. 3 singles 6-3 over Palma before narrowly dropping a 7-6 (4) decision in the second set. Gavrilov was leading in the tiebreaker but once again the rains came and with the light fading fast the match was left unfinished.
Dominican will return home to take on new conference foe Westmont in the first ever meeting between the two teams on Friday, March 15 at 11 a.m. PST at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
