Penguins split Monday doubleheader

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Dominican women's tennis opened a pair of Monday matches with a 6-1 victory over Chaminade before dropping a 4-1 decision to Louisiana State University at Alexandria at Central Oahu Regional Park.
 
The Penguins (5-3) tested its depth against the Silverswords and it shined through as Astrid Craig and Haley Garcia paired for the first victory of the day taking No. 2 doubles 6-0. Hannah Lam-Truong and Sophia Portillo added a 6-1 victory in No. 3 singles while Maria Gavrilov and Logan Koitka completed the doubles sweep with a 6-2 victory on the top court.
 
Lam-Truong kept the momentum going in singles winning 6-1, 6-0 with her doubles partner Portillo finishing next taking No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-1. Ana Rios provided the clinching victory in No. 6 singles as she topped Selena Buttery 6-0, 7-5. Zoe Coggins outlasted Berylin Lau for a 7-5 victory in the first set and was up 4-0 in the second when Lau retired early. Craig provided the final point of the match as she topped Jordyn Luna 6-3, 6-1.
 
It was a quick turnaround for Dominican as it faced the Generals (6-0) who quickly jumped out to a lead behind Olivia Scattini and Annemart Kleijn's 6-2 victory in No. 1 doubles. Carolina Guerrero and Deepalakshmi Vanaraja claimed No. 2 doubles 6-4 but LSUA's Lucie Ivanova and Joline Roesch claimed the third court 6-3 to get the doubles point. 
 
Belen Blasco put the Generals ahead 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 6 singles and Scattini put them a point from the clinch with a 6-3, 6-2 victory on the top court. Gina Dudley kept the strong start to her season going as she won 6-2, 6-3 in No. 2 singles. The last three matches of the day went to third sets but Maria Alvarez was able to outlast Guerrero 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in No. 5 singles to earn the clinch. The remainder of the matches were left unfinished.
 
Dominican will complete its island road trip Wednesday against Hawai'i Pacific at 11 a.m. HST at Kailua Racquet Club.
