Penguins earn sweep on Senior Day

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican celebrated its seniors and a 7-0 sweep over American River College on Saturday at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.

The Penguins (11-4) got off to a strong start in doubles behind Audrey Rafols and Gina Dudley who claimed No. 1 doubles 6-1 over Nareen Cheam and Bella Hernandez. Dominican senior Carolina Guerrero paired with Deepalakshmi Vanaraja in No. 2 doubles for another dominating victory as the duo dispatched the Beavers' (13-1) Mariah White and Kaitlyn Nicholsky 6-1. The final court was close with Ana Rios pairing with senior Haley Garcia as they battled from behind to beat Janne Spitters and Laney Reddick 7-5 in the final doubles match.

Logan Koitka was the first to finish in singles claiming No. 6 singles for the Penguins with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Reddick. Garcia was close behind claiming her second victory of her Senior Day with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Nicholsky in No. 4 singles. Vanaraja clinched the team victory in No. 2 singles as she claimed the 7-5, 6-4 victory over White. Guerrero, like Garcia, was 2-0 on her Senior Day as she survived a scare in the first set 7-6 (7) before a 6-4 victory in the second set to secure the match over Spitters.

The final two singles matches of the day went to third sets with close battles in every game. Rios claimed a 6-4 win in the opening set in No. 5 singles holding off a late push by Hernandez, but Hernandez claimed a 6-4 victory in the second set. The final set of the match was just as close with a narrow margin separating the two throughout, but Rios pulled out the 10-8 win to secure the match. Rafols fell behind early in the first set ultimately falling 7-6 (5) to Cheam in No. 1 singles, but Rafols settled in during set two to win 6-0 and send it to a tiebreaker. Rafols continued to hold the upper hand in the tiebreaker winning 10-5 and finishing off the sweep.

Dominican will return to the court Sunday, April 7 to face rival Academy of Art at 3 p.m. PDT at Bay Club South San Francisco in Daly City, California.
