QUINCY, Ill.- Dominican women's lacrosse continued their Midwest road trip with a nail-biter against the Hawks of Quincy University. Freshman
Nora White led the team with four goals on the day and sophomore
Taylor Pieri was right behind her with three. The Penguins would score six goals in the fourth period, but the Hawks were able to sneak by with the 14 to 13 victory.
Just like she did in the last game, Pieri got the scoring started for Dominican three minutes into the game. Then with 15 seconds left in the period, graduate student leader
Jacelyn Lazore sliced throught the Hawks defense to give the Penguins some momentum heading into the second. White scored her first of four goals in the second when she received a nice pass from
Brooke Vafi to give the Penguins four points. Moments later, Vafi would call her own number to cut the Hawks lead to 9-5.
Quincy controlled most of the third period putting up 13 goals on the board, but
Julianne Lane and White were able to score late in the period. The Penguins dominated the fourth period scoring six times in comparison to only one for the Hawks. Sophomore
Siena Fairbanks scored twice in the period and both her goals were assisted by Vafi. Vafi once again led the team in assists with three while fellow sophomore
Macie Wood dished out two.
The Penguins were down 14-10 with a little over a minute to go, but they didn't give in. Pieri found the back of the net with a minute and change left while Fairbanks second goal came with 24 seconds left. Lazore pushed past the Hawks defense and was fed a dime by Wood finishing the play with a stellar goal with 17 seconds left. Dominican tried for one last attack, but time ran out.
The Penguins will wrap up their Midwest road trip at William Jewell College March 26
th at 4 p.m. CDT.
