LEBANON, Ill. – Dominican women's lacrosse opened their Midwest trip with a match-up against the Bearcats of Mckendree University. Dominican was able to put up 12 goals thanks to four from both graduate student
Jacelyn Lazore and sophomore
Taylor Pieri. The Bearcats would end up outlasting the Penguins 14-12.
Pieri was able to get the Penguins on the board by taking a pass from Lazore and slicing through the Bearcats defense five minutes into the game. Lazore then called her own number as she put one in the back of the net giving Dominican an early lead.
Mckendree controlled most of the second period, but freshman
Stella Artukovich found a hole in the defense and was able to score. Artukovich would finish the day with two goals. The Penguins would go into halftime trailing 10 to 4 but they came out the lockers firing on offense to start the third period. Just like she did to start the game, Pieri opened the second half with a goal scoring off a nice pass from
Brooke Vafi. Vafi would lead the team in assists in this one, dishing out four.
Lazore would have a strong second half finding the back of the net three times. She tried to rally her teammates as one of those goals came with 45 seconds left in the match, but the Bearcats would lock up defensively and secure the victory.
The Penguins will be back in action this Sunday March 24
th at noon CDT to face Quincy University.
