SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis won its home opener 6-1 Friday afternoon over Jessup at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
After having the previous two chances at a home opener rained out, the Penguins (1-0) came out eager to play.
Carolina Guerrero and
Deepalakshmi Varnaraja opened doubles play with a 6-0 victory over their. Warrior (2-2) counterparts, while
Audrey Rafols and
Gina Dudley were not too far behind with a 6-0 victory of their own on the top court to claim the doubles point.
The momentum continued on into singles as
Astrid Craig set a pattern claiming a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Danielle Akabane.
Haley Garcia, Rafols and Dudley all followed closely behind with 6-1, 6-0 victories of their own as Dominican clinched the team victory. Guerrero added one more team point to the score as she held off Annika Rojas 6-3, 6-4 on court four. Jessup's lone point came from Jessica Holbea, last year's No. 1 singles player for the Warriors, who fought off
Zoe Coggins 6-4, 7-5 on the third court.
Dominican will take its home court again Saturday to take on Stanislaus State at noon.
