SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis played its second home match in as many days and claimed its second 6-1 victory of the season Saturday afternoon this time over Stanislaus State at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
Carolina Guerrero and
Deepalakshmi Varnaraja opened the scoring with a 6-0 victory for the Penguins (2-0) while
Audrey Rafols and
Gina Dudley sealed the doubles point with a 6-1 victory over their Warrior (1-2) counterparts.
Maria Gavrilov and
Zoe Coggins made it another perfect day in doubles for Dominican with a 6-4 win over Alyssa Tay and Nicollet Alexander on court three.
Dudley earned the first victory of singles over Tay 6-2, 6-3 on the third court, but Annabelle Mulick claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory for Stanislaus State in No. 2 singles to close the team score to 2-1.
Haley Garcia doubled the lead for the Penguins as she topped Jaedyn Hendryx 6-0, 6-3 while Varnaraja sealed the team win as she held off Emma Yu 6-4, 7-5 in No. 5 singles.
Rafols faced a strong test in the first set at No. 1 singles but was able to do just enough for the 7-5 victory before pulling away in the second set for a 6-2 win to claim the match. Gavrilov was the last to finish as she battled Abbigail Mulick into a tiebreaking third set. Gavrilov took the first set 6-3, but Mulick responded with a narrow 6-4 win in the second. The tiebreaker also went back and forth between the evenly matched pair, but Gavrilov pulled it out 10-8 to give Dominican its sixth team point of the match.
The Penguins will hit the road to take on Cal State LA at 11 a.m. Sunday, February 18 at CSULA Tennis Complex for its next match.
