SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball clashed with the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific Thursday night for second place in the PacWest. Both teams came into the game with only five losses on the year. The Penguins bounced back with a crucial victory after a tough SoCal road-trip.
Dominican defense swarmed the Sunbirds early on forcing three steals and seven turnovers in the first period. Those seven turnovers led to seven points for the Penguins.
The Penguins started the second period with what they did a lot in the first, forced a turnover. The Sunbirds threw the ball away which led to an easy lay-up for senior
Jenna Duley to begin the period. Fresno Pacific ended the half with 13 turnovers with nine of those being steals.
Sophomore
Keyonee Neal led the way for the Penguins in the first half going for nine points on an efficient 5 for 7 from the field. Freshman
Adia Walker who was getting the start for the second game in a row made her presence felt with six points while dishing out two assists.
This PacWest clash for second place was back and forth early on as the largest lead for any team was seven points in the first half. Dominican took a slim three-point lead going into the lockers for half.
Coming out for the third period, the Penguins offense started to heat up. The defense carried in the first half now it was time for the offense to get rolling in the second half. Senior leader Duley got the offense started when she went coast to coast for a lay-up then the Penguins started to eat inside with Neal.
When the Penguins have their duo of Duley and Neal clicking on all cylinders, it's hard to stop them. Duley finished with 14 points and knocked down two three-pointers while Neal posted a game-high 16 points to go along with five rebounds.
In the fourth, the Penguins turned to their stout defense to close out the victory. Junior
Alaiyah San Juan who had been pesky all night guarding the Sunbirds, swiped her fourth steal of the game finishing with fastbreak lay-up. San Juan and Walker each had 12 points while swiping a game-high four steals a piece. Junior
Mikayla Amoroso was right behind them collecting three.
Dominican is back in action this Saturday Feb.10
th at 1 p.m. as they host Westmont.
