PUEBLO, Colo. – Dominican men's lacrosse made it a perfect opening weekend as it claimed a 15-11 victory Sunday afternoon over Colorado State University Pueblo at ALG Stadium.
The Penguins (2-0) spread out the wealth as Per-Adners Olters,
Connor Barnes and
Jesse Fisher all recorded three goals each with Olters also tallying an assist to lead the team with four points.
Tristan Hunter earned his second victory of the season in goal as he recorded nine goals in 57 minutes of action.
The Penguins offense exploded not four minutes into the action as Barnes opened the scoring on an unassisted goal with 11:35 left in the quarter.
Kenny Seiler found
Jason Eide 25 seconds later for a man-up goal and Fisher scored 20 seconds after that off an assist from Olters to take the 3-0 lead.
Dominican maintained the three goal advantage over the Pack until Kyle Parker's man-up goal capped 3-unanswered goals for CSU Pueblo to tie the game 6-6 with three minutes left in the half. Barnes stopped the run and gave the Penguins back some momentum as he found the back of the next with 1:58 left in the half and the defense did not allow another shot from the Pack to hold the lead heading into the third.
Brennan Krebs scored in a man-down situation with 5:57 left in the third to start off another flurry of offense for Dominican. Olters followed with a goal a minute and a half later before
Zach Thoma converted a man-up opportunity off an assist from
Caelan Briggs to give the Penguins an 11-7 lead with 3:57 left in the period.
After CSU Pueblo cut the lead back to three on a goal from Ezra Terry, Thoma and Olters scored back-to-back goals for Dominican to extend the lead to 15-10 with six minutes remaining in the game. The Pack had plenty of shots down the stretch to cut into the lead but could manage only a single goal against the Penguin defense.
Dominican will host Concordia University Irvine in its home opener on Saturday, February 17 at 2 p.m. PST at Kennelly Field.
