Penguin comeback falls short

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball was unable to complete a fourth quarter comeback falling 67-66 Saturday afternoon to Jessup at Warrior Arena.

Alaiyah San Juan led the Penguins (6-8, 0-3 PacWest) with 23 points while Taylor Linzie added a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds to go with four steals. Kayla Vieira led the Warriors (7-3, 2-0 PacWest) with 17 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Dominican forced 21 turnovers but shot 38.2% from the field while Jessup took full advantage of its offensive opportunities converting 45.3% of its field goal attempts.

The game was close in the opening minutes but the Penguins took a 13-8 lead as Linzie converted a 3-point play before Mikayla Amoroso, San Juan and Alex Salise all converted from behind the arc. The Warriors were scoring on the other end but were limited to makes inside the arc as they watched Dominican open a small lead. Natalie Moulos knocked down a step-back 3-pointer for Jessup to help close the gap and a putback by Makaila Glynn in the final seconds of the quarter closed its deficit to 16-15.

The Penguins used strong defense and offensive rebounding to spark a 5-0 run capped by a putback layup by Linzie to make it 21-16 with 8:16 remaining in the half. San Juan and Salise hit back-to-back 3-pointers for Dominican to extend the lead to eight four minutes later, but the Warriors used an aggressive gameplan to earn several trips to the line and erase the deficit and take a 31-30 lead into the second half.

Jessup started the second half on fire from beyond the arc as Vieira knocked down a pair behind the arc with her second pushing the lead to 45-34 with 2:44 remaining in the third quarter. Amoroso quickly knocked down a 3-pointer on the other end and San Juan followed up a defensive stop with a 3-pointer from the right elbow to close the gap to 45-40 in the span of 40 seconds.

The fourth quarter saw the Warriors build leads and the Penguins close the deficit back to three multiple times, but one final 7-0 run by Jessup pushed the lead to 62-52 on a Tatiana Newsome 3-pointer with 2:26 remaining. Linzie swiped a pair of interior passes and Dominican found Andraya Perez in transition for a layup and a 3-pointer to close back within four with one minute remaining. The Penguins forced another turnover and Perez came off a screen and hit a 25-foot 3-pointer from the left elbow to close the gap to 62-61 with 34.8 seconds remaining.

Jacklyn Kulow made a contested layup with 16 seconds for Jessup but San Juan hit a step-back 3-pointer on the other end to tie the game 64-64 with 8.9 remaining.  Newsome hit a well defended 3-point attempt with 0.7 seconds as it looked like the Warriors had secured the victory but players left the bench early earning a technical foul with San Juan cashing home both opportunities to close back within one. The Penguins had the ball near their bench with a chance to win the game but Brianna Byrnes got a hand in the passing lane to poke the ball away and earn the victory.

Dominican will return home to host Chaminade Thursday at 5:30 p.m. PST in the last home game of the calendar year at the Conlan Center.
