SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball rode a dominant fourth quarter performance to a 70-59 victory Thursday night over Chaminade at Conlan Recreation Center.
Adia Walker provided the late spark off the bench scoring 10 points to go with three rebounds for the Penguins (7-8, 1-3 PacWest).
Taylor Linzie added 15 points and eight rebounds with
Abby Cooper chipping in 15 points and five boards. The Silverswords (3-7, 2-2 PacWest) were led by 13 points and nine rebounds from Sameera Elmasri. Dominican won the game from the charity stripe where they knocked down 82.1% while Chaminade hit 52.6% of their attempts.
After the Penguins opened an early 3-point advantage, Elmasri knocked down a 3-pointer form the right corner to spark the Silverswords on a 7-0 run to take the lead with 6:02 remaining in the opening period. Dominican battled back as
Mikayla Amoroso finished through contact and converted the 3-point play before Cooper laid it off the glass for two to take a 9-8 lead one minute later. The teams continued to trade leads the rest of the way with Walker grabbing an offensive board, drawing a foul and cashing in on both attempts from the charity stripe to close the period and send the Penguins into the second leading 17-16.
Linzie found Cooper cutting to the basket early in the second half and Cooper followed up with an offensive board and a putback through contact the next time down the floor to give Dominican some breathing room at 23-19 with 7:11 remaining in the half. Chaminade closed back within one but Linzie and Cooper continued to pound the paint on offense to help build a lead and put the Silversword bigs in foul trouble. Amoroso found
Jazmine Barnes streaking down the court in the final seconds of the half for an easy layup to send Dominican into its locker room leading 34-26.
Barnes opened the second half with a pair of makes from the free-throw line to take a double-digit lead, but the Silverswords began chipping away. Julien Parado sparked a 15-2 run with Morgan Escobedo contributing five points including the 3-pointer that gave Chaminade a lead and it took a 45-42 advantage into the final four minutes of the quarter. Layups by San Juan and Amoroso gave the Penguins back a 1-point advantage with 1:30 left in the third, but Kali Jones laid it in on the other end to send Chaminade into the final period leading 49-48.
Maddy Weaver finished through contact to cap the 7-0 run that spanned the quarters pushing the Silverswords lead to 54-48 with 8:50 left on the clock. Amoroso scored four straight to close the gap back to two points two minutes later. Walker tied the game with a layup with 5:21 remaining, but Elmasri scored on the other end to give the lead back to Chaminade. Cooper scored the next four points to spark an 8-0 run that pushed the Penguins in front 62-56 with 2:36 remaining in the game. This time Dominican did not cede any momentum to the Silverswords as San Juan answered a Chaminade layup with a step-back 3-poiner from the top of the key and the lead grew back to 10 where it remained at the final buzzer.
Dominican will head across the Golden Gate Bridge to take on Menlo on Saturday at 1 p.m. PST at Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
