Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Pengs fight tough against FPU

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican women's volleyball returned home from their three-game southern California road trip Friday night for a PacWest clash against the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific. The Penguins would end up dropping this one three sets to one, but they made the Sunbirds earn every point.

Dominican had two players post a double-double on the night, and Fresno Pacific had no answer for the duo throughout the match. Graduate student Reagan Macha led the team in kills slamming home 22 to go along with 11 digs while senior Camille Rivers dished out 36 assists with 14 digs. This marked River's 14th consecutive match with double-digit assists.

Fresno Pacific started the match strong as they were the first ones to 25. The Pengs didn't put their heads down as they came back for the second set a refocused group. Macha was getting fed dimes from Rivers left and right and freshman Kali Young stepped up in a big way. Young, the South Carolina native, posted a season best 13 kills on the night which helped opened the floor for Dominican. The duo of Young and Macha helped push the Pengs to a set two victory tying things up at one a piece.

Dominican fought tough for every point against the Sunbirds. In the third set it looked like Fresno Pacific would run away with it, but the Pengs defense clamped up along with a couple aces from Rivers kept them within striking distance. The Sunbirds would end up winning the third by five points which set up a dramatic fourth set.

Senior Ella Heckman energized the team with a couple back-to-back kills in the fourth set which gave Dominican a small lead midway through. Things got interesting late as Macha slammed one home for a 25-24 lead. That point on, both teams had no quit in them as they would go point-for-point. Fresno Pacific ended up having the most gas left in the tank as they wrapped up a hard fought fourth set 30 to 28.

The Penguins are back at it tomorrow Nov. 9th at 3 p.m. as they host Azusa Pacific.
