SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican women's volleyball hosted the Oaks of Menlo College Saturday afternoon for a PacWest showdown. After coming off a victory Wednesday night against Academy of Art, Dominican stayed hot and dropped the Oaks in four sets Saturday.
The Penguins offense started off strong to begin the match as graduate student
Reagan Macha and senior
Ella Heckman caused havoc for the Oaks defense in the first set. Heckman collected a couple of kills off a couple beautiful dishes from teammate
Camille Rivers. Macha, the Texas native, posted a game high 21 kills to go along with nine digs. Heckman and junior
Avery Schneider closed out the first set for the Pengs when they came down with a huge block. Dominican's defense especially in the blocking department would pay dividends later in the match.
Menlo would bounce back in the second set to even the score heading into the third. The Penguins didn't like dropping the second set and it showed as they started the third on fire scoring the first five points. Junior
Kendal Kibanoff had an impact on every one of those five points and finished off the scoring run by forcing the Oaks into an attack error. Rivers was everywhere on the court this afternoon posting a game high 25 assists with a couple of kills. This marked her 17
th straight match going for more than 10 assists. Fellow senior
Rein Bocage tallied 21 digs, and none were bigger in the third set when she dove to prevent the Oaks from scoring. Macha would close out the second set slamming one past the defender for the 25
th point.
The difference in this match was the Penguins coming down with crucial blocks at the right time. They collected eight blocks on the day with Schneider,
Ashlyn Daugherty, and
Reese Bozak all having four a piece. Midway through the fourth set Dominican trailed 17-10, but that's when the team regrouped and dug deep. Schneider and Heckman had a couple of kills while Rivers collected a couple of aces to cut into the deficit. The Oaks took a 24-23 lead, but the Pengs showed resilience once again while under pressure. Menlo would not score another point and Bozak and Daugherty sealed the victory as they soared into the air to grab a game-winning block.
Dominican will be back in action Tuesday Nov. 19
th when they travel to Jessup University at 6 p.m.
