Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Penguins push ranked Vulcans to the limit

HILO, Hawai'i – Dominican women's soccer put a scare into No. 25 University of Hawai'i at Hilo but ultimately lost 4-2 Sunday afternoon at UHH Soccer Field.

The Penguins (4-5-1, 1-3-0 PacWest) had limited chances with only five shots but made the most of their opportunities as Jackie Lancaster recorded her first goal of the season while Megan Clapinski recorded her third. The Vulcans (6-0-2, 3-0-0) were led by Jazlynn Ellis and her two goals and one assist.

Dominican got off to a quick start as Ysabella Belandres took a ball down the left sideline and crossed it past the face of goal where Jackie Lancaster stuck her foot in front of a defender to redirect the pass into the back netting for the 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. UHH answered less than a minute later as a corner kick found the head of Alyssa Padron who nodded it back to the middle where Shea Christiansen was able to tap it into the goal and tie the game.

The Vulcans took advantage of another corner in the 24th minute as Filippa Graneld placed a ball perfectly to the near post and Jazzlyn Ellis was able to beat the keeper to the ball heading it inside the post for the 2-1 lead. UHH added to its lead in the 47th minute as Ellis put a ball high over the keepers hands and a charging Teani Arakawa was able to put it in the back netting off the bounce to extend the lead to two in the 47th minute.

The Penguins though found a response as Megan Clapinski took a ball down the right boundary and saw the keeper out of her net sending a high looping shot from 30-yards out over her head and inside the far post to make it 3-2 in the 50th minute. After a corner kick was foiled Emma Wilson put a ball back into the box where Clapinski headed it back and Lancaster kicked it out of the air and towards the left post but Phoebe Barnes was able to dive and parry the ball wide of the net to preserve her lead.

The Vulcans were able to extend their lead back to two as Diana Garcia sent a high shot off the cross bar in the 68th minute and the rebound landed at the feet of Ellis who left no doubt on her attempt. That was the separation UHH needed as chances over the final 22 minutes were scarce for both teams.

Dominican returns home to take on Biola in its Breast Cancer Awareness game Saturday at 3:30 p.m. PDT.
