Penguins drop defensive battle with the Eagles

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer fell 1-0 to Biola in a tight defensive minded contest Saturday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

Shots on goal were hard to come by in the game as the Eagles (2-5-4, 2-2-0 PacWest) managed only one while their defense held the Penguins (4-6-1, 1-4-0 PacWest) without a shot on frame.

The first half was largely uneventful with the teams trading possession in the midfield while sending shots in from a distance that were either blocked on the way through or off target. Jazmin Montalvo had the best look for Biola in the half as she took a long shot in the 25th minute that glanced off the top woodwork before bouncing away from goal. Dominican's best chance came in the 41st minute as Miranda Gregory collected a ball in the middle of the box spun and sent a right footed shot curling towards the upper-right 90 but the ball was inches wide sending the game into the half with no score.

Dominican had another dangerous opportunity in the 52nd minute as Jenna Pevenage sent a corner kick low and into the center of the box to an awaiting Ysabella Belandres but her shot went high. The first and only shot on goal came in the 79th minute as a corner kick found the head of Peyton Nelson but Natalie Haro was able to make a diving save to her left to keep her net clean.

In the 82nd minute, Marije Rechin again looked to connect with Nelson on a corner kick putting the ball into a dangerous spot where the Penguins backline attempted to head the ball out of danger but the attempt ended up in the back of the net giving the Eagles the 1-0 lead. Dominican made several dangerous runs on the attack in the final nine minutes, but Biola's backline did a good job of getting to the ball first on passes inside the box to prevent a tie.

The Penguins will return to the pitch Thursday to take on rival Academy of Art at 3:30 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field.
