SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer ran out of time in the second half in a 2-1 loss to Concordia University Irvine on Thursday at Kennelly Field.
The Penguins (7-7-1, 4-5-0 PacWest) generated plenty of pressure with 21 shots and nine on frame, while holding the Golden Eagles (5-6-1, 3-4-1 PacWest) to 11 shots with eight on goal.
Dominican had a beautiful look at the net in the second minute as a turnover gave them numbers and
Diego Grande slipped a ball to
Lex Bernier who shot towards the far post but Andre Flores got a toe on it to redirect it away from his net. Less than a minute later a long ball found Miguel Arroyo and he retained possession despite
Drew Swenson poking the ball away on his first touch allowing Arroyo to go unimpeded to the top of the box and put the ball inside the right post.
The Penguins found its offensive footing and peppered the net with shots with a good chance by
Diego Grande in the 17th minute that forced Flores to make a diving save to his right to poke the ball just wide of the net. In the 20th minute a free kick was push forward by
Brandon Selway and Grande attempted to head the ball inside the near post but Flores again dove in and got a hand on the ball to steer it wide. Flores made saves in the 27th and 31st minute on shots by Grande and Bernier as Dominican continued to look for the equalizer.
Arroyo created another chance for CUI in the 39th minute as he took a ball down the left side of the field cutting towards the endline in the box before crossing the ball to Dylan Graham in front of the net who put the shot high into the middle netting for the 2-0 lead. Bernier found some space at the top left corner in the 52nd minute ripping the ball on frame but Flores stood tall and knocked it down before controlling it to end the chance.
Arroyo looked to extend the Golden Eagles' lead in the lead in the 59th minute as he faced a net with only a defender to beat but
Brandon Selway made the defensive save on the goal line to keep Dominican within striking distance. Bernier kept the pressure up for the Penguins with shots in the 77th and 78th minutes that were blocked by defenders on the way through.
Drew Swenson chipped a ball into the box in the 82nd minute finding the right foot of Grande who buried it in the netting to cut the deficit to one. Dominican had several good runs into the box but the last scoring opportunity came in the 88th minute as the ball bounced from head to head in the box before Bernier was able to nod it towards the net but Flores was there for the save.
Dominican will return to the pitch Saturday to face Vanguard at 11:30 a.m. PDT as the Penguins celebrate Senior Day at Kennelly Field.
