Penguins fall to Lions in second half

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer fell 3-2 to Vanguard in an explosive second half that saw the teams trade leads Saturday at Kennelly Field.

Lex Bernier led the Penguins (7-8-1, 4-6-0 PacWest) with a brace to bring his goal tatl to six on the season. The Lions (8-3-3, 6-2-2 PacWest) applied heavy pressure in the second half, doubling Dominican in shot attempts to finish with 18 shots total and 13 on frame.

Diego Grande had the best chance on net for the Penguins in the first half as he headed a ball towards the bottom right corner but Aiden Hay was there to make the save in the 32nd minute. Vanguard had a pair of shots on goal in the first half as well but both were easily collected by Alejandro Reyes in the net.

Dominican struck first in an offensively charged first half as Diego Grande gathered a ball at the top of the box and back-heeled the ball to a cutting Bernier who buried a right-footed attempt inside the netting at the left post for a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute. Seconds later Anthony Hernandez-Perez sprinted into the left side of the box and let loose a shot near post but Reyes was able to make the diving punch to steer it wide of net.

Ben Sieber tested Reyes again in the 67th minute with a point-blank shot, but Reyes stood tall and punched the ball back out, unfortunately Adan Alvarado was trailing the play and gathered the rebound and kicked it into the back netting to tie the game. Four minutes later DJ Kiernan held the ball at the top of the box with his back to the goal and pushed the ball to a charging Anthony Medina who sent the ball into the right side of the goal for the 2-1 Lion lead.

Dominican pushed for an equalizer and in the 81st minute, Bernier was taking down inches from the top of the box setting up a great free kick opportunity. Bernier took the free kick and deflected his shot off the back of a member of the wall and into the right side of the goal to tie the game at 2-2. The Penguin joy did not last long as Sidney Dina took a ball around several defenders near the box before slotting a ball through feet to Anthony Hernandez-Perez and he beat Reyes 1-on1 to the far post to retake the lead for Vanguard.

Dominican will conclude its season next Saturday as it travels south to face Westmont at 11 a.m. PDt at Thorington Field.
