IRVINE, Calif.- Dominican women's volleyball opened their southern California road-trip Wednesday night at Concordia University Irvine. The Golden Eagles are the first of three opponents the Penguins will face on this SoCal trip. The Pengs were able to win two sets in this one, but CUI was able to earn a hard fought victory in five sets.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a fast start winning the first set, but Dominican was able to find some momentum towards the end of the set that carried into the next two. Graduate student
Reagan Macha collected a couple of kills in the first set and would finish the night with a team high 12 kills. Freshman
Kali Young caught fire late in the first set which led to success throughout the night as she would finish one kill shy of a double-double. Young gave the CUI defense fits all night slamming home nine kills to go along with her 10 digs.
Dominican would come out victorious in sets two and three thanks in part to a couple of things, blocks and aces. Sophomore
Ashlyn Daugherty led the Penguins frontline as she would collect a game high five blocks. Junior
Avery Schneider was all over the court for the Penguins as she grabbed three blocks herself to go with eight kills. The Penguins also did a good job of identifying the weak spots in the Golden Eagles defense and exploiting it as they would finish the night with seven aces. Freshman
Melena Wong led Dominican in this department posting three aces which marked a season high.
It was another night in the office for the senior duo of
Camille Rivers and
Rein Bocage. Rivers, just like she's been doing all season long, was dishing out assists left and right. The Vacaville native would finish with 33 assists which marks her 11
th consecutive match with double-digit assists. On the flip side, Bocage would finish the night collecting a game high 21 digs which marks the 15
th time this season she has posted double-digit digs.
Dominican will be back on the court Friday Nov. 1
st in San Diego as they square off against PLNU.
