SAN RAFAEL, Calif. –
Megan Clapinski scored a late game-winner to lift Dominican women's soccer past Academy of Art 2-1 Thursday afternoon at Kennelly Field.
The Penguins (5-6-1, 2-4-0 PacWest) peppered the net with 27 shots and 12 of them on frame while limiting the Urban Knights (0-9-1, 0-5-0 PacWest) to five shots with only one on goal.
Ysabella Belandres scored her second goal of the season while Clapinski collected her fourth in the win.
Dominican opened the scoring in the 10th minute as
Jackie Lancaster took a ball down the right side and crossed it into the box where
Ysabella Belandres chipped the ball with her right foot over the goal keeper and inside the back post for the 1-0 lead. The Penguins had another prime opportunity in the 18th minute as a corner kick found
Emma Wilson who headed the ball towards the net but it was blocked by a defender. The rebound fell to the foot of
Brisa Navarrete who sent a rocket towards the net but hit the crossbar.
ART U responded in the 23rd minute as Alanna Del Carlo sent a cross into Piper Schmidt who missed on her first attempt at the ball freezing the defense and keeper allowing her time to get a toe on the bouncing second attempt and push it to the far post for the 1-1 tie. Offensive chances were limited the remainder of the half as the teams returned to their benches in a stalemate.
Clapinski had a good look to open the second half as she went 1-on-1 with the keeper in the 49th minute but Nicole Peoples made the save for the Urban Knights. The Penguins seemingly lived in their attacking third as they searched to break the tie with another prime chance in the 63rd minute as Belandres sent a rocket off the crossbar but the rebound landed in front of
Felicity Muro but she was unable to sneak it past Peoples as the score remained tied.
The breakthrough came in the 89th minute as a foul set up a set piece near midfield for Dominican and
Jenna Pevenage delivered a perfect ball into the middle of the box where
Tahlia Smith headed it high and Clapinski ran under it and headed into the net for the 2-1 victory.
Dominican will head south to take on Menlo at 2 p.m. PDT Saturday at Wunderlich Field in Atherton, California.
