Penguins fall in defensive struggle with Silverswords

HONOLULU – Dominican women's soccer fell 1-0 to Chaminade as it opened its island road trip Tuesday at Saint Louis Field.

The Silverswords (2-2-2, 1-1-0 PacWest) dominated possession for much of the game but shots were hard to come by for both teams.

The Penguins (3-4-1, 0-2-0 PacWest) best chance came in the 37th minute as Jackie Lancaster found a crease in the middle of the field and quickly made her way to an empty spot just outside the box turning and sending a right-footed shot at the net, but the power was not there and Izabella Holly scooped up the ball for the save. Chaminade's best chance of the half came in the 44th minute as a corner kick went even with the far post and Gracie Knowd nodded it down towards the lower right corner but Natalie Haro made a diving save to send the game into the half tied 0-0.

Madeline Knowd helped the Silverswords break through early in the second half as a long throw deep into the attacking third found the head of sister Gracie Knowd who popped the ball high towards the back post with a header and the spin on the ball took it into the back netting for the 1-0 lead. Good ball movement helped Araceli Mejia get into a good scoring position in the 53rd minute but a defender cut down her angle and Mejia was unable to generate power on her right footed shot after repositioning herself for the shot.  There were no more shots on goal for the remainder of the game as it devolved into mostly a contest in midfield.

The Penguins will return to the pitch Thursday to face Hawai'i Pacific at 7 p.m. HST at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium in Waipahu, Hawai'i.
