SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball never trailed as it claimed its sixth straight victory 71-53 Saturday afternoon over Academy of Art at the Conlan Center.
Keyonee Neal led the Penguins (15-3, 8-2 PacWest) with 18 points on 61.5% shooting and 20 minutes of action. Three teammates joined her in double-figures led by
Adia Walkers 12 points, while
Jenna Duley added 11 and
Alex Salise finished with 10. Lucia Revenga led the Urban Knights (4-12, 3-7 PacWest) with 11 points.
Dominican turned the game to its advantage forcing ART U into 24 turnovers while committing only 13 of its own resulting in a 27-12 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Penguins dominated the early part of the game as they scored the first six points of the game and forcing three Urban Knight turnovers. Salise scored five points including the first 3-pointer of the game from the right corner and Dominican took an 11-2 advantage with six minutes left in the period. After Duley extended the lead to 10 with a pair of free-throws, ART U began to find its footing in the game with four quick points to cut its deficit to four and they held it there heading to the second period.
The teams continued the seesaw play into the second period but the Penguins were able to regain their 10-point lead as Salise found
Olga Faasolo for a short jumper in the paint to make it 25-15 with 3:24 left in the half. Maddie Morrow gave the Urban Knights a quick response knocking down a 3-pointer and then cutting back within five on a Christy Ojide layup. Just as Academy of Art was looking to cut back within a single possession, Duley stole the ball away on defense and took it the other way for a layup and Dominican reasserted itself for the final two minutes of the half.
Jazmine Barnes capped a 7-point run with a make from the charity stripe to send the Penguins into the locker room with a 32-20 lead.
Neal kept the run going into the second half as she scored the first five points for Dominican with a 3-pointer from the left wing making it 37-20 two minutes into the period. It took four minutes but the Urban Knights cut the game back to single digits as Morrow once again connected from behind the arc to cut the Penguin lead to 41-33. The feat was short lived as
Andraya Perez hit a 25-foot 3-pointer on the other end to push the lead back to 11. Perez added another make from deep to push the lead back to 17 with under a minute remaining in the period.
ART U was able to slowly chip away at the lead with Anna Fornells knocking down a 3-pointer to cut back within 11, but Perez answered on the other end and
Alaiyah San Juan swiped the ball and found
Alex Salise open for another 3-pointer in transition to make it 62-45 penguins with 6-6:12 remaining. The teams traded buckets the rest of the way until Walker knocked home one last 3-pointer from the left wing for the Penguins with nine seconds remaining.
