SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican men's basketball returned home from their three-game Hawaii road-trip to clash with Academy of Art Saturday afternoon. The Penguins beat Chaminade in overtime Monday night and Dominican played another overtime game Saturday against Academy of Art but this time going into double overtime.
The Urban Knights would end up outlasting the Penguins 87 to 82, but the Penguins battled until the final buzzer. Dominican had four scorers over double-digits and on the defensive side of the ball, they turned Academy of Art over 20 times.
Dale Currie led the way for the Penguins going for 23 points while knocking down four long balls. The Sacramento native came alive late in the game and no bucket was bigger than when the Penguins were down by three with 30 seconds left in the game. Currie drove the ball hard into the paint and flipped up the lay-up which had major spin on the ball. He ended up making the lay-up while getting fouled.
He drained the free throw completing the three-point play and the game was all tied at 65. The Penguins had a great defensive series in the final seconds to force overtime.
Fellow senior
Marcus McCutchen dropped 18 points to go along with six boards. McCutchen was tearing up the Urban Knights defense by getting into the paint time and time again.
Brendon Johnson was one rebound shy of a double-double ending the game with 15 points. The Montana native played a game-high 50 minutes and was the orchestrator on offense making sure everybody knew their assignments throughout the long game.
In overtime, senior
Garrett Siebels came alive hitting a running jumper along with nailing a three-pointer. Siebels finished with 15 points while going a perfect 6 for 6 from the charity stripe.
The Urban Knights pulled away in the second overtime, but the Penguins gave them all they could handle.
