SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer fell 1-0 to Simon Fraser on Sunday afternoon at Kennelly Field.
Statistically the teams were nearly even with the Read Leafs (1-0-1) outshooting the Penguins (1-1-0) by one, but SFU put five shots on frame and earned five corners which proved the difference.
Neither team was able to generate much offense to begin the game with the first shot coming in the 22nd minute off the foot of
Danielle Gonzalez from just outside the box but the shot went wide. Sarah Loewen continued to wander away from her back line and the Penguins nearly made her pay as
Alison McNeal tried to chip a ball over the top but the ball went high as Loewen fell into her net.
The Red Leafs controlled the early part of the second half and after consecutive corner kicks, Kate Cartier chested down a corner kick from Alyssa Clark and it bounced just inside the near post for the 1-0 lead in the 59th minute. Mikayla Tupper nearly added to the SFU lead five minutes later as she took aim at an empty net from the middle of the box but a Penguin defender got her foot in front of the ball to keep the ball out of the net.
The Penguins were unable to generate many quality opportunities down the stretch as the Read Leafs dropped back into a compact defensive shape and sought to control possession.
Dominican will return to action Thursday as it travels north to face Cal Poly Humboldt at 3 p.m. PDT at College Creek Field.
