ARCATA, Calif. –
Miranda Gregory scored her second goal of the season, but a late goal saw Dominican women's soccer fall 2-1 to Cal Poly Humboldt on Thursday afternoon at College Creek Field.
The Jacks (3-0-0) and Penguins (1-2-0) were nearly even in shots on frame with Cal Poly Humboldt holding a narrow 5-4 advantage.
The Jacks opened the scoring as Emilia Long maintained possession under heavy pressure from the Penguin back line before passing the ball to Emma McChristie 5-yards above the box and she put her shot into the top right 90 to take the lead in the 25th minute.
Dominican subs picked up the pressure in the final 10 minutes of the half as a foul on the edge of the box gave the Penguins its first opportunity and Ali McNeal beat the wall but Carson Thomson-Terrel was there to make the save in the 35th minute. In the 45th minute, Gregory poked a ball past one defender on the counter then sent another flying past as she stopped the ball at the top of the box before bending a shot over the keepers hands and under the crossbar to tie the game at half.
The teams traded chances early in the second half until a through ball in the 81st minute found the foot of Freda Duran Arellano who raced into the box and put a ball just inside the far post to take a 2-1 lead. Last goal was a poor goal kick headead down and the passed forward to Frida Duran Arellano for a breakaway and she beat the keeper far post with her right foot at a tight angle.
Dominican will return to the pitch Sunday as it travels south to take on Stanislaus State at 6 p.m. PDT at Warrior Stadium.
