Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Penguins unable to keep pace with unbeaten Vulcans

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer gave everything it had but it was not enough as No. 6 University of Hawai'i at Hilo secured a 3-0 victory Thursday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

The Penguins (3-5-1, 0-1-1 PacWest) were stingy in the first half as they allowed few scoring changes to the Vulcans (6-0-1, 2-0-0 PacWest), but the constant pressure eventually broke through as Megan Donovan recorded a brace for UHH.

Donovan opened the scoring in the as Jazlynn Ellis was able to reach a foot past a defender to deflect a cross back across goal and Donovan knocked it in with a right shin to take the 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. The Penguins tightened down on defense and Rylee Buesing made a pair of fantastic saves in the 28th and 32nd minute to send Dominican into the half trailing by a single goal.

Jackie Lancaster made a fantastic run into the box in the 56th minute as she tried to go near post on an equalizer but her shot rang the left post and bounced away. One minute later, Filippa Graneld sent a high cross into the box that Donovan was able to get a touch on and then narrowly beat a defender to the bouncing ball to slot it past the keeper for a 2-0 lead. The Vulcans continued to apply pressure as Teani Arakawa sent a shot on frame that Buesing was able to push into the post but the rebound fell to Ellis who knocked it home for the 3-0 lead in the 61st minute.

Dominican will remain on its home pitch for a game against Chaminade on Saturday with kickoff set for 3 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field.
