SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer made a valiant push down the stretch but fell short of a comeback Saturday falling 2-1 to Chaminade at Kennelly Field.
In a mostly even match, the Penguins (3-6-1, 0-2-1 PacWest) finished with nine shots while holding the Silverswords (5-2-2, 3-0-0 PacWest) to six shots.
Gabrielle Wampler scored the first goal of her senior season late to draw Dominican back within one.
A light rain turned into a consistent downpour in the first half dampening the offensive play from both teams as they adjusted to wet and windy conditions. After 44 minutes of neither team putting a shot on net, a deflection attempt slipped past the leg of a Dominican defender and Kenna Kiefer sent a shot on frame from 30-yards out and beat the keeper high for a 1-0 Chaminade lead at the half.
Jackie Lancaster beat a defender along the left side and crossed a ball across the box to
Miranda Gregory in the 59th minute in what looked like a golden opportunity to tie but the shot went out to the right.
Marissa Ray played
Danielle Gonzalez behind the defense in the 81st minute and Gonzalez went one-on-one with the keeper putting a first-touch shot towards the right post, but Naomi Takata got her fingertips on the ball to push it wide and swallowed up the rebound to preserve her lead.
Haley Mo'okini put a dangerous free kick into the box in the 84th minute and the Penguins keeper tried to punch it out but the ball deflected off her hands and into the back of the net for a 2-0 Chaminade lead. Dominican would answer a minute later as
Tanya Bills sent a shot at the net but it caught the hand of a defender to draw a penalty kick. Wampler then calmly put it home into the left side to cut the Dominican deficit to 2-1 with five minutes remaining in the game. Dominican was unable to get off another shot and the Silverswords hung on for the win.
Dominican will head south to take on Azusa Pacific at 7:30 p.m. PDT Saturday at Cougar Soccer Field.
