Penguins roll in victory over Vulcans

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Diego Grande recorded his second career brace to lead Dominican men's soccer to a 4-1 victory over the University of Hawai'i at Hilo on Thursday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

Grande has scored three goals in the past two games for the Penguins (4-3-1, 2-0-0 PacWest) and now has four on the season. Dominican finished with 21 shots and 12 on goal while holding the Vulcans (4-3-0, 1-1-0 PacWest) to 15 shots and five on frame.

Grande opened the scoring in the 10th minute as Alejandro Reyes sent forward a punt that Jesus Duran flicked forward with his head to the sprinting Grande who took a first touch shot with his right foot past the UHH keeper for the 1-0 lead. The Vulcans brought some heavy pressure of their own over the next 10 minutes and got the pay off in the 22nd minute when Alex Carmona sent a long cross from the right sideline that found the head of a charging Colby Lee to level the score.

Both teams saw some chances over the next 10 minutes but neither could find the back of the net until Chris Barrios spotted Grande calling for the ball and put a perfect pass over the top of the defense that Grande collected and then slotted home with his left foot for the 2-1 lead in the 34th minute.

The Penguins came out of the halftime break more focused on the defensive end as they limited the UHH opportunities while maintaining possession for long stretches of time. After a handball in the box gave Dominican a penalty kick in the 68th minute, Lex Bernier stepped to the spot and put a perfect shot inside the left post for his third goal of the season and doubling the Penguin lead. Cole Porter capped off the offensive explosion as he headed down a Brian Diaz cross for the 4-1 lead in the 86th minute.

Dominican will finish its homestand Saturday as it faces Chaminade at noon PDT at Kennelly Field.
