Penguins find late equalizer against the Silverswords

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer dominated possession but struggled to get the ball into the net as it tied Chaminade 1-1 Saturday at Kennelly Field.

The Penguins (4-3-2, 2-0-1 PacWest) finished with 27 shots and 13 on goal while holding the Silverswords (0-6-2, 0-2-1 PacWest) to two shots. Cole Porter scored his second goal of the season for Dominican to equalize late.

Despite constant pressure, Brandon Yasue made several remarkable saves to keep Chaminade in the lead deep into the second half. Dominican continue to pressure bringing in an extra attacker for the final 10 minutes as it tried to find the back of the net. The move paid off as Armando Jimenez put a ball forward to Jesus Duran who put it through quickly to a sprinting Porter who buried the ball top shelf to tie the match 1-1 in the 83rd minute.

Brandon Selway got a right foot to a ball two minutes later and popped a ball high but Yasue was barely able to punch the ball back into the field of play to keep it out of his net and Louie Galdamez followed up with a shot on the rebound that hit Yasue right in the chest at the back line as the score remained tied. Selway had another great opportunity in the 86th minute as he headed a free kick on frame but Yasue was there again to make the save.

Nico Flores then tested Yasue with a shot from 20-yards out towards the bottom right corner, but Yasue got his fingertips on it to push it wide. Lex Bernier then had another prime opportunity at a game winner with under a minute left on the clock as he too aimed at the bottom right corner but once again Yasue was able to steer it wide by inches and preserve the tie.

The Silverswords struck first in the seventh minute as they quickly moved the ball until Owen Caba cut to the end line and sent a cross back in front of the net to Kainoa Carpenter who put the ball into the middle of the net for the 1-0 lead. Porter looked like he would tie the game as he sent a shot from the top-right corner of the box towards the back post but it struck the woodwork in the 29th minute. After Zach McClellan shoved down a Penguin in the box in the 43rd minute to set up a penalty, Yasue dove in the right direction and gobbled up a shot from Chris Barrios to maintain the lead at the break.

Dominican will have a week to prepare for its next match Saturday at Azusa Pacific with kickoff set for 5 p.m. PDT at Cougar Soccer Field.
