Penguins fall to Seawolves

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer fell 1-0 Thursday afternoon in a tightly contested match with Sonoma State at Kennelly Field.

The Penguins (2-2-1) outshot the Seawolves (2-2-1) by four shots with two more on frame but they could not find the back netting. Chris Barrios led the way with three shots for the Penguins with one on goal.

The first half was largely uneventful with only Dominican managed a shot on frame in the half. Barrios had the best opportunity as he cut down the right side to the top of the box and put a ball high on the center of the net but Jack Chapman pushed it out by his fingertips to maintain a scoreless tie at the half.

The Seawolves drew a foul on the left edge of the box in the 51st minute and Jvon Cunningham put a shot back post to open the scoring and give his team the 1-0 lead. The Penguins looked to counter quickly as Diego Grande worked his way free on the right side and sent a ball back to Barrios at the top of the box and he took a touch past one defender and put a ball inches outside of the near post.

Dominican had one last golden opportunity to tie in the 81st minute as Barrios sent a ball into the middle of the box and Brandon Selway leaped high to get his head on it but the header went over the crossbar and SSU claimed the victory.

Dominican returns to the pitch Saturday as it travels to Chico State with kickoff set for 7 p.m. PDT at University Soccer Stadium.
