CHICO, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer suffered its worst defeat of the season in a 3-0 loss Saturday night to Chico State at University Soccer Stadium.
Not much went right for the Penguins (2-3-1) on the night as they finished with four shots with two on goal while the Wildcats (6-0-0) had 14 shots with seven on frame.
Chico State opened the scoring in the 34th minute as Adrian Fontanelli put a free kick right in front of goal where Carson Zarate was able to get a touch on it to redirect it enough to beat the keeper for the 1-0 lead. Dominican had a chane to tie in the 51st minute as
Lex Bernier worked his way to the top of the box and put a frame low towards the near post and the keeper was able to stop the ball and dive on it before
Joe Blakely could cash in on the rebound.
Things went downhill quickly from there as Sylus Sells scored on a breakaway goal in the 53rd minute off the counter and Noah Ross added another in the 55th minute in a similar manner to quickly take a 3-goal lead.
Dominican will return to the pitch Wednesday as it travels across the Golden Gate to take on San Francisco State at Cox Stadium at 1 p.m. PDT.
