San Rafael, CALIF. -- Dominican women's lacrosse (10-0) continued its dominant run this past weekend with a win over divisional foe Saint Mary's College. Both sides of the ball were locked in from the very first draw. Sophomore
Brooke Vafi Led the team with six points, five goals and an assist, with freshman
Olivia Johnson adding four goals and an assist alongside freshmen
Taylor Pieri and
Morgan Newkirk who both tallied hat tricks. The offensive outbursts put Johnson, Newkirk and Vafi in top-5 points per game in the conference.
Dominican's defense was also in full effect, a charge led by goalie
Arin Wilson who made five saves with no turnovers. Freshman Jordan Dangerfield had another solid performance, leading the game with four ground balls. Freshman
Sarah Brosseau anchored the defense throughout the matchup as she made her first career start on her own side of the ball.
Dominican controlled nearly all aspects of the game early on, leading 7-1 after the opening quarter. The Penguins then put up six more in the second quarter, taking a 13-1 lead into the half time break.
As the game progressed, Dominican was able to get even more offensive players involved. Freshman
Emma Roy, sophomore
Gillie Mason and graduate student
Brielle Rapsas — informally know as the "Starbucks Crew" — would all see goals of their own. Dominican would eventually run away with this one on its home turf with the final score showing 22-2 Penguin win, the largest margin of victory in program history. With the win, women's Lacrosse earned its first ever WWLL North Division 1 Title.
"It's a cool moment, this group has already done so much. It's tough to celebrate these accomplishments because our goals for the program are so big and the season is still in full swing. It's something we will reflect on at the end of the year and be proud of," head coach Joseph Manna said.
The WWLL consists of 14 teams that play in three divisions (North, Central, South) within the conference. All three division champions are given an automatic qualifier to the WWLL conference tournament with five other teams being given at-large bids. As it stands now, Dominican can earn one of the top 2 seeds for playoffs with a win over Cal Berkeley on April 7
th at Memorial Stadium. The WWLL will take place at UCSD in La Jolla, CA.
"We've been preparing for playoffs pretty much this entire season. Every game is another opportunity for us to work on our systems and get better together. We've been building up the excitement of aiming towards the playoffs since the first day of practice, so it's been easy to keep our girls locked in on what is coming in the next few weeks," assistant coach Victoria Tucci said.
