Penguins battle the Bobcats in MEC championship

FROSTBURG, Maryland.- Dominican women's lacrosse squared off against the Bobcats of Frostburg State University for the second consecutive year in the Mountain East Conference championship. The black and gold have been Frostburg's toughest opponent the last two years and that remained the same Sunday afternoon.

The Bobcats would jump out to a 3-0 start to begin the game as they would collect one of those goals on a man-up opportunity. Morgan Newkirk, one of the senior captains for the Pengs, halted the Bobcats momentum when she called her own number firing one past the goalkeeper. Newkirk, the San Diego native, left it all out on the field Sunday afternoon as she would finish the game with a team high three goals.

Speaking of leaving it all out on the field, fellow senior captain Olivia Johnson was a force once again in the draw department collecting a game high 10.

Dominican would catch fire in the second quarter as they opened it up scoring two straight thanks to Newkirk and Alayna Cipolla. Then Cipolla would pass a dime to teammate Ryan Bionda who finished it home for the Pengs 4th point of the game cutting the Bobcats lead down to two. Johnson would close out the half with a sweet goal as she cut into open space in the Bobcats defense, once again assisted by Cipolla.

Newkirk would open the scoring in the second half as she powered her way thru the defense putting one in the back of the net to cut the Bobcats lead down to one. Johnson took a break from dominating the draws when she put one past the Frostburg goalie after another nice dish from Cipolla during a man-up situation late in the third. Kyra Evans, the sophomore out of San Diego, called her own number with 30 seconds left in the third to make it an 8-9 game.

The Pengs will head into the 2027 season looking to make it three straight years with 10 or more wins.
