No. 18 Dominican University of California (11-0) was center stage under the bright lights of Memorial Stadium on Friday night as it took its talents south of the Richmond bridge for an evening matchup with the University of California, Berkeley (3-7). It was nothing but fireworks for the Penguins who capped off their regular season with another dominant divisional win as the Penguins took down the Bears by a score of 23-9.
Freshmen
Olivia Johnson and
Morgan Newkirk along with sophomore
Brooke Vafi tallied sx points each as the offense was as explosive as it ever has been jumping out to an early 9-1 lead. Freshmen
Siena Fairbanks,
Taylor Pieri and
Macie Wood all added hat tricks to help immortalize the offense in this inaugural season. Part way through the opening half, Wood converted on a step-down 8-meter snipe that all found the opposite corner. Pieri added to an already impressive resume with another highlight goal off a flip-play that was launched from what might as well have been the nosebleed section of the stadium seating, also finding the corner of the target to extend the Penguin lead.
"Offensively, everything was just flowing," head coach Joseph Manna said.
Johnson and Wood also displayed great versatility as the pair excelled in the draw circle. Freshmen
Morgan Dougherty, Jessie Connors and
Jordyn Dangerfield displayed dominance in transition for the Penguins, creating many scoring opportunities for Dominican from the defensive end, opportunities that helped add the the Dominican 23-goal onslaught. Freshman
Arin Wilson led the game in saves with four as the Penguin goaltending continued to do its part in highlighting the lop-sided victories that have already been seen so many times for the Penguins this season, solidifying a 15-3 lead that they took into the locker room, a lead that was also helped by sophomore
Gillie Mason and freshman
Sydney Gunnerson who combined for a trio of goals.
The scoring didn't stop there as the final score read 23-9 in favor of the Penguins. Dominican will finish the season as the WWLL regular season co-champions, along with No. 8 Arizona State who finished at 10-0. Dominican will receive the No. 1 seed for playoffs where it will see common foe UCSB in the first round. If Dominican advances, it will either play No. 4 conference seeded UCLA — who sits at No. 10 in the nation — or No. 5 seeded Cal Poly. The Penguins leave for San Diego on Friday and games will be live streamed on the South Mountain Sports YouTube Stream.
