SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis picked up an important 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon over Cal State LA at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
The Golden Eagles (3-11) went up early as Hideka Takamura and Alexandra Hindu claimed the first doubles victory of the day 6-3 over
Carolina Guerrero and
Hannah Lam-Truong.
Zoe Coggins and
Haley Garcia knotted the segment back up for the Penguins (7-7) moments later as they won No. 3 doubles 6-4 over Savaughna Mayo and Courtlyn Lam. CSULA's Sarah Olmos and Sakura Kurokawa traded games with Dominican's
Audrey Rafols and
Gina Dudley as the No. 1 doubles match headed to a tiebreaker to decide the team point. Olmos and Kurokawa came away with the 7-6 (4) victory after the tiebreaker to give the Golden Eagles the 1-0 team lead.
Rafols avenged her doubles loss as she won 6-1, 6-2 on the top court to open the scoring in singles play, tying the team score.
Astrid Craig then added a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mayo to give Dominican a 2-1 lead, but Takamura claimed No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-1 moments later to tie the match once again. Garcia answered the call for the Penguins with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Lea Rolland to put her team a singles victory away from clinching the win. It didn't take long as Coggins also won 6-3, 6-3 in No. 4 singles to seal the victory for Dominican.
The Penguins will return to the court Sunday as it hosts Fresno Pacific University at 11 a.m. PDT at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
