Penguins sweep Beavers on Senior Day

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis bounced back from a tough week with a 7-0 victory Saturday over American River College on Senior Day at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.

Senior Haley Garcia paired with freshman Astrid Craig to claim the first victory of the day for the Penguins (5-7) in a decisive 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Gina Dudley and junior Zoe Coggins joined forces for the first time this season as they added a 6-3 victory on the top court in doubles. Another senior-freshman pairing for the Penguins added a clean sweep of doubles with upperclassman Madison Giannetto joining with the younger Sophia Portillos for a 7-6 (0) victory in No. 2 doubles.

Coggins got off to a strong start in singles as she opened the scoring with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Davina Escalante on court two. Garcia added the second victory of her senior day by knocking off the Beavers' (6-2) Bella Hernandez 6-0, 6-2 and putting her team a point away from the clinch. Dudley secured the team victory with a 6-1, 6-1 victory on the top court while freshman Hannah Lam-Truong collected a 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 5 singles to keep things rolling for Dominican. Freshman Astrid Craig outlasted Maiah White 6-4 in a tight first set at No. 3 singles, but bounced back for a 6-2 victory in set two. Antoinette Schreiber celebrated her senior day with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles with all her teammates and coaches gathered on the sidelines to cheer her on.
