DALY CITY, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis fell 5-2 Friday afternoon to Academy of Art at Bay Club South San Francisco, the third of four matches this week.
The Urban Knights (6-4) got the early lead in the match as Viktoria Leth and Paulina Alvarez won No. 3 doubles 6-1 while Jessica Plazas and Erica Hellbe added the 6-3 victory in No. 1 doubles. Dominican was able to even the match as
Haley Garcia won by default with only five athletes available for ART U in singles.
Leth added a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles with Plazas winning 6-0, 6-3 on the top court to put ART U one point away from the clinch. Ortega secured the clinch with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in No. 2 singles and Alvarez added the 6-2, 6-2 victory on court five for the Urban Knights final victory of the match.
Zoe Coggins was the bright spot for the Penguins (4-7) as she overcame a 6-2 loss in the first set against Hellbe to earn a narrow 7-5 win in set two with a crucial break late in the set. She then won a narrow tiebreaker in the third set 10-7 to give Dominican the win in No. 4 singles.
Dominican will return home to face American River College at noon PDT as they celebrate their outgoing seniors at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
