Penguins fall in nail-biter to Mavs

FRESNO, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis fell 4-3 Monday in a seesaw battle with Colorado Mesa at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.

The Mavs (7-10) got the early advantage in doubles play as Julianna Campos and Paige Furin won No. 3 doubles 6-2 to take the early lead. Gina Dudley and Audrey Rafols provided the response for the Penguins (4-5) as they won No. 1 doubles 6-2, but CMU was able to clinch the doubles point as Issy Coman and Macy Richards won 6-3 in No. 2 doubles to take the early lead in the match.

Richards kept things rolling in singles as she was the first to claim a victory for the Mavs 6-1, 6-2 on court three to push the lead to 2-0. Rafols gave Dominican its first point of the match as she claimed the 6-1, 6-3 victory over Makenna Livingston in a matchup of two top-10 regionally ranked opponents. Coman extended the CMU lead back to two as she topped Dudley 6-0, 6-4 in No. 2 singles and the Mavs were a singles victory away from clinching the victory.

The Penguins had other plans as Zoe Coggins won 6-0, 7-6 (2) to swing some momentum back to her team. Carolina Guerrero overcame a 6-1 first set loss to Halle Romero to win the final two sets at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-2 and tie the team score 3-3.

All eyes turned to No. 6 singles between Haley Garcia and Furin. Garcia held on in the first set 6-4, but Furin answered with a 6-1 set two victory to force a winner-take-all third set. The final set did not disappoint as the two athletes went back and forth trying to claim a victory for their respective teams. Eventually the set moved to a tiebreaker and Garcia had several opportunities at match point, but Furin held off defeat eventually flipping the script for the 7-6 (7) victory for her team.

Dominican will return to the Bay Area to face Metropolitan State at 1 p.m. PDT at Bay Club South San Francisco Tennis & Pickleball Courts.
