Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Penguins fall to Hawks late

OAKLAND, Calif. – Dominican men's basketball fell late 88-76 Friday night to Holy Names at Tobin Gymnasium.

Jaayden Bush led the way for the Penguins with 23 points, seven steals and five rebounds, while Garrett Siebels added 20 points and five rebounds. Roman Behrens led the Hawks with 25 points and seven assists with Damiri Lindo chipping in 20 points and seven boards. HNU was nails from distance as it knocked down 12 of its 18 3-pointers while Dominican left 14 points at the free-throw line in a game that was close nearly the entire way.

The Hawks were hitting from distance early as Carter Plousha's 3-pointer sparked a quick 5-point burst that put HNU out in front 14-9 with 13:29 remaining in the half. Jake Blazona slipped a pass down low to Shafee Mumin for a 2-handed slam before Bush stole the ball away on the other end and hit two from the charity stripe to cut the deficit to one.

HNU continued to hit from downtown as 3-pointers by Ayodele Aderoboye and Roman Behrens pushed the lead to 25-18 with 7:31 remaining. The Penguins finally put together a longer run with Bush slashing into the lane for two to start it up while PJ Volz scored the next four points to cut the Hawk lead to 32-31 with 3:28 remaining. The teams largely traded points for the remainder of the half with Omari Davis briefly tying the game with 22.9 seconds left, but Lindo positioned himself well on the block for a layup to end the half and give HNU the 40-38 lead.

Fastbreak points were the story of the early second half as HNU used a steal and a fastbreak layup to take a 44-40 lead, but Dominican answered with a pair of transition layups from PJ Volz off two assists from Bush to take the 45-44 lead with 17:15 remaining.

Dale Currie knocked down a 3-pointer and Behrens added the next five points for the Hawks as they build a 58-49 lead with 11:33 left on the clock. Siebels ended the run with a 3-pointer from the right elbow to start a 9-2 run which he ended with another 3-pointer to get the Penguins back within two with 8:47 remaining.

It remained a one possession game until Japjit Gill knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 4:57 remaining to extend the Hawk lead to four and Grant Johnson knocked down a step back from the right wing to extend the lead to 75-66 with 3:11 remaining.

Dominican will conclude its season Saturday, February 25 against Academy of Art at 3:30 p.m. PST at the Conlan Center. The Penguins will also be celebrating Willie Long Day as the longtime fixture of the university celebrates 50 years of employment.
