Dominican narrowly falls to Urban Knights in final game of the season

San Rafael, CALIF. -- Dominican University of California (12-16, 7-13) concluded the 2022-23 season with a narrow defeat to the Academy of Art by a score of 75-70 in the Conlan Center.

Junior Garrett Siebels added a 19-point game to an already strong stat line for the season, the ninth time this season he has netted 15 or more points in his first season with Dominican. Junior Marcus McCutchen tallied a near-triple double with 11 points and nine rebounds while shooting 50% from deep as a trio of players, freshmen PJ Volz and Jaayden Bush in addition to graduate student Tyler Williams, all earned 10 points in the defeat while Williams also added nine points to put him near triple double territory with Siebels.

Dominican was able to turn the tide on a tough stretch of shooting in the first half, seeing a 45% success rate from behind the arc in the latter half in comparison to 29% in the opening 20 minutes. Dominican also corrected its course from the free throw line in the second half, seeing an 18% increase in success from the charity stripe while ending 17 of 22 from the line, good enough for a 77% conversion rate. The Penguins were narrowly outmatched in paint points as ART U saw one more basket from in-close while also connecting on two more baskets off turnovers as both teams capitalized off a plethora of created turnovers with Dominican slimly winning that battle with one less turnover.

The story of the early going was Dominican clawing back to tie the game before soon finding itself behind by 4-5 points a time, a pattern that occurred three times before the Penguins took their first lead at the 11:09 mark on a Siebels layup that was created off a Williams turnover at mid-court. Dominican found itself up by five moments later after a successful short-range Volz jumper from the perimeter of the paint, but the advantage was short-lived as the Urban Knights went on a 14-0 run that lasted the next four minutes. Successful free throws down the stretch helped Dominican stay at pace with the visitors despite heading into the locker rooms down 35-30 as the Penguins found success on each of their last five charity shots.

It took Dominican the entirety of the opening eight minutes of the second half to battle back and eventually take the lead as senior Matthew Hallam converted on a layup after the Penguins forced an Urban Knight turnover seconds before. ART U found itself on another run following the lead Dominican momentarily held as the score board stated a 10-point, 65-55 lead for the Urban Knights with 4:42 remaining. The tide turned at this point after the Urban Knights' Mike Asante received a technical foul for hanging on the rim after a power slam before receiving another seconds later for misconduct directed towards the officiating. The initial technical that Asante received was already his second of the game meaning that he was ejected from the contest even before receiving another technical for his misconduct towards the officials, sending Dominican to the foul line for a trio of shots all of which were successful by Siebels before he drilled a 3-pointer moments later as possession stayed with Dominican following the free throws given via technical fouls. In all, it took only 16 seconds for the Penguins to make a 10-point deficit a 4-point disadvantage after the technicals were assessed, giving Dominican new life with just 4:26 remaining.

ART U followed suit with a long ball of their on the next possession before Bush corralled his own rebound and eventually found Siebels for a mid-range jumper that brought Dominican back within five. Volz drained a 3-pointer of his own following a pair of successful Urban Knight free throws, eventually depleting the Urban Knight led to two after Bush converted on a pair of foul shots with 33 seconds left on the clock. Unfortunately, Dominican would not come any closer to the victory as ART U foul shots led to an eventual 75-70 Urban Knight victory.
