PJ Volz powers his way into the paint

Penguins fall to Urban Knights

Box Score BELMONT, Calif. – Dominican men's basketball kept it close for the majority of the game but a late run from Academy of Art gave them the separation it needed for the 89-75 victory Saturday afternoon at Walter Gleason Gymnasium.

PJ Volz led the way for the Penguins with 28 points and four rebounds while Marcus McCutchen contributed 23 points and seven boards. Will Balata led the Urban Knights with 18 points and eight rebounds.

Things were tight for the first ten minutes of the half until Rodney Munson got a steal and fastbreak layup to spark a 10-2 run with Stephon Hall knocking down a shot from distance to give the Urban Knights a 24-12 lead with 9:14 remaining. McCutchen made his way into the paint to connect on a short jumper and Tyler Williams slashed down the lane for two more to cut the deficit back to single digits one minute later.

After ART U expanded its lead back to 14, McCutchen came back in from off the bench and immediately connected on a layup before getting a block on the other end. McCutchen made two more layups to trim the deficit to 33-25 with two minutes on the clock after his personal 6-point run. Volz capped the half as McCutchen found him in transition for a 3-pointer from the right elbow to end the half and send Dominican into the locker room trailing 37-30.

The second half started with 10 minutes of trading small runs for both teams of no more than four. Dominican was the first to get over the 4-point barrier as Volz knocked down a 3-pointer off the screen and Justin Brown followed up with a layup from underneath the hoop to cut the ART U lead to 61-56  with 9:55 remaining.

The Urban Knights regained its double digit lead on a 9-0 run capped off a pair of ART U steals leading to transition layups to take the 75-61 lead with 4:33 left on the clock. There was not enough time for the Penguins to recover as the Urban Knights held on for the victory.

Dominican will return to action Friday as it takes on Holy Names in the final meeting between the two historic rivals at 7:30 p.m. PST at Tobin Gymnasium.
