SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer fell 1-0 to Westmont in its final road game of the season Saturday afternoon at Thorrington field.
The first half was largely a midfield battle as Dominican's defense made things difficult for its counterpart. Westmont did have the first scoring opportunity of the game as a cross in the 14th minute found Amarys Machado, but
Natalie Haro read the attempt well and was perfectly positioned to collect the volley in front of her net.
Carmi Dotario and
Gabrielle Wampler found some space in the 24th and 28th minutes, respectively, but neither were able to get the pace on their shots they were hoped allowing Maya Pablos to make a pair of saves for the Warriors. The best opportunity of the half came from Sierra Martin who was able to take the ball from the Penguin defense and have a good look at the far post with under 30 seconds left in the half, but her shot rolled wide and the teams remained deadlocked after 45 minutes.
Westmont finally broke through the Dominican backline in the 47th minute as Grace Duckens was able to pop a throw into the box into the air to Martin who picked the shot out of the air and put it into the netting for the 1-0 lead. Martin threatened to increase the lead three minutes later, but Haro again made a good read and closed the angle and deflected the attempt out of bounds. Haro made yet another save seconds later off a header attempt to keep her team within a goal.
Bella Bueno made a great run in the 58th minute to get behind the defense and tried to put a ball towards the far post but Pablos pushed the ball wide to preserve her lead.
Megan Clapinski and
Tanya Bills had some nice combination passing to get Bills an attempt from a good spot, but the Westmont defense was able to get a leg on the attempt and deflect it out of bounds.
Dominican will return home to host Fresno Pacific in its final game of the season at noon PST at Kennelly Field.
