Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Penguins unable to find goal to top Sunbirds

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer concluded its season with a 0-0 tie with Fresno Pacific on Thursday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

The Penguins dominated possession and opportunities with 18 shots and five on frame while holding the Sunbirds to seven shots and two on goal. It was not enough as neither team could find the back of the net.

Marissa Ray had the first prime opportunity of the game as a Dominican corner kick fell to her feet in the center of the box but her left-footed shot was deflected by a defender to keep the game scoreless in the fifth minute. The Sunbirds then had a pair of chances off free kicks from 30-yards out in the 15th and 20th minutes as Madilyn Hernandez took both kicks and put it high towards the center of the goal but Natalie Haro pushed the first shot over her bar before leaping and securing the second shot before either could cross the goal line.

The Penguins had a flurry of chances in the space of a minute as they tried to enter the half with a lead. Jackie Lancaster led the charge as she got behind the defense but her shot attempt was blocked to begin the 42nd minute. The deflection then fell to the feet of Megan Clapinski who took aim at the top center of the net but Birgitta Eggertsdottir was able to get a hand on it to keep it out of her net. The ball then made its way to Alejandra Melendez who attempted to head the ball into the net but Eggertsdottir was able to get in front of the attempt and secure the ball to prevent the goal.

The second half saw a severe drop off in shots and scoring opportunities with the best attempt coming near the end of the match as Carmi Dotario sent a cross to Ray in the box and she attempted to deflect it out of the air towards the near post but the ball went wide of the post and the game ended 0-0.
