Penguins Fight Tough on Senior Night

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell to Fresno Pacific 3 sets to 0 in their PacWest match at Conlan Center.

The Penguins took home court for the final time this season, and the final time ever for their three seniors: Amani Abed, Emma Hartvickson, and Sophia Hull. Dominican came into tonight's match off its first conference win against Hawaii Pacific last weekend.

Jasmine Heyward led both teams with 10 kills and 5 digs in the match. Ella Heckman was next up with six kills and three digs. Emma Hartvickson was right behind her with five and two, respectively.

Hull set the tone as first up to serve in the game. The Penguins secured themselves a 4-point lead to open set one. Despite Fresno's attempt to come back, a pair of kills from Heyward brought the score within one. The Sunbirds took a final lead to close the set 25-21.

Dominican kicked off set two with another first point. The Sunbirds came back and stretched the lead to 10-5. The Penguins clapped back with a four-point scoring streak to bring the set within one point. Avery Schneider made a crucial block to tie the score, and Miekayla Surnip laid down a service ace to help her team take a 12-11 lead.

The Sunbirds pulled ahead 17-12, but Dominican was not having it. Hartvickson and Heyward came in with big kills and started a scoring momentum that tied the game 18-18. Fresno pulled ahead late to take a set victory at 25-22.

In the third set, the teams traded points until Fresno took a 7-5 lead that they carried for the remainder of the set. Dominican played tough to the end with multiple scoring opportunities that shortened the lead. The Sunbirds closed out the final set 25-13.

The Penguins will close out their season on Saturday, Nov. 18th at 2 p.m. against Academy of Art at Kezar Pavilion.
