SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell to Academy of Art 3-2 (25-23, 25-20, 25-19, 15-8) Saturday afternoon at Kezar Pavilion.
The Penguins took the court for the final time this season against their rival Bay Area school. Dominican had a quick turnaround after hosting Fresno Pacific for their Senior Night on Friday evening.
The Penguins had opportunities to produce throughout all sets and had some performance stand-outs. Avery Schnieder led her team with 16 kills and three block assists, playing a key role on both sides of the ball.
Emma Hartvickson came in right behind her with 10 kills and one block-assist, and
Jasmine Heyward with seven and one respectively.
Miekayla Surnip also posted an impressive 27 digs in the match.
Dominican earned the first point of set one from an Urban Knight attack error. Thanks to a pair of kills by Heyward and three more errors by Academy of Art, the Penguins quickly took a 5-2 lead. The Urban Knights fought to come back, tying the score 23-23, but the Penguins did not let this stop them. Kills by Hartvickon and Heckman secured a 25-23 set one victory for the Penguins.
Edee Leslie opened up scoring in set two with a kill off a block of Urban Knights. After a few scoring opportunities from both teams, the set was all tied up at 3-3. Academy of Art started to draw a lead but the Penguins fought to use their first set momentum to keep the score close. After falling behind by nine points, Dominican battled back to within one twice at 16-15 and again at 19-18. However, the Urban Knights were able to hold on to their lead on the way to a 25-20 set victory.
Set three began with three straight Academy of Art points until
Amani Abed slowed momentum with a kill down the center of the court to make the score 3-1. The Urban Knights continued to stretch their lead to 20-10. At this point, the Penguins recalibrated and capitalized off of their opponents' errors and own offensive production to bring the set to 23-18. Dominican kept themselves in the set for two match points before Academy of Art closed it out at 25-19.
Dominican earned itself the first point of set four from an Academy of Art service error. The teams traded points for the first portion of the set with four ties until the Urban Knights pulled ahead. A 3-point lead was the most that Academy of Art could create before the Penguins went on a 3-point run to tie it back up at 15-15 and 16-16. Schnieder led the way on an 8-1 run with three kills and a block assist to give Dominican a 23-17 lead late in the fourth. After ART U fought off four set points, Schneider put them away with one last kill to send the match to a fifth set..
Braewynne Matthews earned Dominican the first point of the final set with a kill that bounced off a wall of Academy of Art players. The Urban Knights came back with a scoring run that put them up 5-1. The intensity rose after a Penguin timeout and kills by Schnieder and Heckman brought the score back within three points at 8-5. Dominican fought to chip away at the lead, but Academy of Art was able to maintain it and closed the set 15-8.
