Dominican men's basketball opened their 2023-2024 in the city facing off against SFSU in the PacWest/CCAA challenge.
Brendon Johnson led the Penguins in scoring going for 15 points on an efficient 6 for 7 from the field. The Northern Idaho College transfer wasted no time making an impact for his new team as he caused havoc for the Gators both on offense and defense. Johnson went 3 for 4 from behind the arc and was active on defense swiping three steals.
The Penguins were down 11 heading into half-time, but head coach
Justin Argenal had to love the energy the team brought out with them in the second half.
Dale Currie and
Carter Plousha led the second unit for the Penguins and their willingness to drive it hard in the paint rubbed off on their fellow teammates. Currie and Plousha, both Holy Names transfers went a combined 7 for 10 from the charity stripe which helped cut the Gators deficit in the second half.
The Gators couldn't pull away from Dominican as they hung around all night. Junior transfer
Conner Turner led the Penguins on defense where he swatted a game high two blocks. The Penguins led the Gators in blocks (4) and steals (12).
Dominican is back at it tomorrow night when they match up against Sonoma State at 5 p.m.
